River Wye, Glanwye Beat.
May 10th
Glanwye is a lovely stretch of the upper Wye. It is available through the WUF office for autumn grayling fishing, but not during the trout season. So I was delighted to win a postal auction for one day's fishing in May.
It turned out to be a delightful day. My host kindly showed me the beat, and whilst we walked and talked, there were trout beginning to rise. The water was clear and at a good temperature. All looked very promising.
Once I waded out, I could see there were Yellow May Duns rising from the water. The trout were feeding in different ways. Some were taking the ascending nymph, others sipping from the surface, whilst a few were in shallow water and splashing about in dramatic style. Trying to work out what was going on is one of the things that makes fishing so much fun. The result? The sippers took an emerger pattern, sat in the film. The swirling risers would sometimes take a nymph and the noisy splashers remain a mystery. That's fishing.
